The megacity Rises to Dangerous Smog After Festival of Lights
On Tuesday morning inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered inhaling severely hazardous air that registered in the "alarming" category.
Extremely High Air Quality Measurements
Various sections of the capital showed an pollution measurement above 500, which translates to ten times the healthy limit recommended by the global health authority.
In some locations, readings of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of 1,800, amounting to 15-20x exceeding acceptable limits.
Firecracker Ban and New Developments
Since 2020, authorities had implemented a total prohibition on the sale and use of firecrackers during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the hazardous pollution that engulfs the city as the cold season sets in.
Yet earlier this year, the recently formed city leadership petitioned the judicial authority to propose a modification of the ban.
Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – previously doubted by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a balance between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".
Judicial Decision and Implementation
To the disappointment of medical and ecological advocates, the court agreed to the appeal, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be set off during designated periods throughout the Diwali.
Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable flouting of the time restrictions across the capital, with minimal regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly variety.
Many air quality sensors throughout the city registered contamination peaking around the night hours to extremely hazardous measurements recorded during Diwali in at least three years.
International Consequences
The proliferation of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also initiated a blame game with bordering Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab pointing to deteriorating air quality in Lahore on hazardous particles traveling from neighboring India following the festivities.
Long-Standing Pollution Issue
The dangerously high levels of atmospheric toxins in Delhi have persisted as a major challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the situation gradually deteriorating.
Near the festival period, the concentration of toxic airborne contaminants in the air has been observed to shoot up to significantly exceeding the most severe records ever measured in China's capital, which was previously viewed as the world's most polluted city.
Diverse Contamination Contributors
The situation in the capital is attributed to a combination of different contributors including automobile exhaust, dust, development work, waste incineration and smoke from crop residue ignition in neighbouring regions of farming communities.
Within these states, farmers illegally set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, producing hazardous haze that becomes contained over the city as winter air arrives.
Medical and Economic Consequences
Public health and economic toll on the approximately 33 million people living in the metropolitan zone is significant, according to numerous research.
This pollution leads to elevated rates of nervous system, heart and circulatory and lung diseases, and can even lead to cancer.
Air quality crisis is projected to be accounting for approximately 10k early mortalities per year in the capital.
